until Tokyo Olympics

Venue plans for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be revised.

On 10th June,
Tokyo Governor, Yoichi Masuzoe announced that the venue plan will be revised because of its expensive cost.

On 31st May,
The Tokyo National Stadium, constructed for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, was closed because it is going to be reconstructed for the 2020 Olympics. The farewell party of the National Stadium was held on 31th.

I wonder if what kind of stadium will be built with lower cost.

  1. I don't know anything about the estimated cost of Tokyo 2020, but just this news alone sounds quite a good sign of careful cost management. It is much better to make such a planned decision early on, with more than six years to go, rather making some hasty last-minute change that cannot be easily implemented.

Costs, as well as timescale, are critical factors in such large projects, and overspending seems to the "normal". But, with the overall cost being so high, going over the budget by even a few percent would mean a lot of yen to be found from somewhere.

  2. The too high cost for the venue has been controversial. So Tokyo Governor made a good decision, I think. However, although Tokyo is supposed to submit the basic plan to the IOC in February, it was just the announcement and it hasn't started to consider about what to change and how to change. He has to take leadership in it and proceed promptly.
